I once was-

a name, a voice,

a woman with goals,

a daughter of ache,

a mother of mirrors.

I said “I am,”

but meant “I fear.”

I said “I know,”

but meant “I need.”

Then came silence-

not loud like bells,

but like snow

falling on a soul that finally stopped explaining.

The leaf never says “I am falling.”

It simply falls.

The wind doesn’t say “I am free.”

It simply moves.

So I watched.

Not to control.

Just to see:

where does the “I” live?

And I found it hiding-

in the gap between a thought and the breath,

in the story wrapped around a sensation.

There was tightness in the chest.

A grip in the jaw.

A flicker in the belly.

And I learned- these are not me.

Sensation is not identity.

Emotion is not enemy.

Observation is liberation.

And stillness…

oh, stillness.

She walked in barefoot,

and ego fled, confused.

She said nothing,

but I remembered everything:

how rivers serve without asking,

how the sky offers space to all things,

how daisies never try to bloom louder than each other.

I stopped needing to be good.

Or deep.

Or ready.

I just was.

And in that being,

I became more useful than ever.

To love.

To life.

To what’s bigger than me.

Now when ego speaks up,

I smile like I know a secret.

Because I do.

I know that nothing is mine,

and yet everything is part of me.

Even this.

Even you.

Even the part of me that once said,

“I.”

Afterword


There comes a moment when the mirror no longer shows who we are,
but who we believed ourselves to be.
Change is not drama,
it is light refracted in motion.

To shed the hardened shell of the self
is not a loss,
but the beginning of flying translucent.

We do not kill the ego,
we change it.
Reshape it to serve rather than steer.
And in that shift-
we begin to live as essence, not armour.
