The Man Who Saw

On the full moon of May, we honour the day Siddhartha became the Buddha- awake, still, and free.

He sat-
not to gather answers
but to still the noise.

While others built towers of thought,
he let his crumble.

One breath.
Then another.
Then none to claim.

Beneath the fig tree,
he did not find a god,
nor a throne,
nor a title.

He realised
there was no one to find anything.
And still,
he saw.

He saw the wheel-
the turning of craving and becoming,
the sorrow of reaching,
the ache of clinging.

He didn’t shout it out loud.
He pointed to a flower.
Smiled.
Waited for those who could see.

“All things arise and pass away,”
he said.
“Be still.
Know this.
And suffer less.”

Through quiet seeing.
Through steady discipline.
Through courage to face
all that is.

He taught awareness over belief,
presence over escape,
enoughness over desire.

Even the ‘I’ who seeks
is just another ripple
on a lake that stills
when left alone.

Call him Buddha-
but he called himself
awake.

And today,
we remember-
not to bow,
but to sit.

Afterword

The Buddha did not leave us a religion.
He left us a path.
Quiet. Honest. Walkable.

Sit. Breathe. Observe.
Let the world move without grabbing it.
Let the self soften without losing it.
This is the noble work.

And if you ever forget,
return to the breath.
It waits,
like an old friend beneath the noise.

A line from the Dhammapada:
“All that we are is the result of what we have thought.
The mind is everything. What we think, we become.”
