Namaste
The word Namaste (नमस्ते) comes from Sanskrit and translates as:
“Namaḥ” (नमः) – meaning bow, reverence, or adoration.
“Te” (ते) – meaning to you.
Together, Namaste means “I bow to you” – yet its meaning runs deeper than words. It carries the essence of humility, respect, and recognition- within those words lies a quiet truth: I see you. I honour the light within you, which is the same as the light within me.
When spoken with intention – and paired with the gentle gesture of palms pressed at the heart – Namaste expresses:
“The divine light within me bows to the divine light within you.”
It is not just a greeting, but a reminder that we are connected – souls reflecting each other’s light.
Namaste is more than a word – it is a gesture, a breath, a quiet bow that carries something far deeper than language can hold.
The palms meet softly at the heart, the head bows slightly, and in that moment, there is no distance between you and the one before you.
It is not just a greeting – it is an invitation to meet one another as equals, soul to soul.
The Light That Bows
Two hands meet, yet nothing is held.
Fingers rest quietly against the chest-
a pause, a breath, a bow.
In this stillness, one heart greets another.
No words are needed, for the silence speaks-
I see you.
I honour you.
The light in me greets the light in you.
No one stands higher, no one lower.
Just two souls meeting in quiet knowing,
like stars bowing softly to the night.
To practice Namaste in daily life is to carry its essence in quiet moments.
Begin each morning by pressing your palms together at your heart, whispering softly: “I honour the light within me.” When greeting others, pause – whether with words or silence – and silently offer: “I see you. I respect you.” In moments of conflict, take a breath and silently say: “I honour the soul beneath this moment.” Throughout the day, let Namaste extend beyond people – to nature, to fleeting beauty, to simple moments. End the day with your hands at your heart, whispering: “I bow to the lessons of this day.” Namaste is not just a word – it is a quiet promise to walk through life with presence, respect, and grace.
Afterword
Namaste is not bound to temples or traditions – it is a gift you can carry anywhere.
To offer Namaste is to pause, to soften, to recognise the sacred within yourself and another.
In a world that rushes past, Namaste whispers: Slow down. Breathe. Remember that we are not so different – we are reflections of the same quiet light.
